AMAC 2019 Muslim Community Day and Banquet

On May 3rd, Middle Tennessee community leaders came together to celebrate the out community.  Vice-Mayor Jim Shulman and Councilman Fabian Bedne read Mayor Briley's proclamation declaring May, 3, 2019 as American Muslim Community Recognition Day.  Imam Anwar Arafat recounted his recent visit to Christchurch, NZ where he met the survivors of the massacre in March and spoke about the need to address Islamophobia and change attitudes and policy by supporting organizations like AMAC.  AMAC honored three community members for their support of the Muslim community:  Gini Pupo-Walker as a Champion of Diversity and Inclusion for her work in the Metro Nashville Public Schools, Rep. Johnny Shaw ( Allyson Sneed accepted) as a Champion of Religious Liberty for defending the rights of Muslims in the Tennessee State legislature, and Mohamed Shukri Hassan as a Champion for Empowering the Muslim Community. We had several awesome spoken word artists and poets who were proud of their Islamic identity and finished with a nasheed.  Thanks to everyone who attended and showed their support for the critical work AMAC is doing in Middle Tennessee.
