Zaker’s Success Story: Advancing Digital Equity in Tennessee

When AMAC launched the Digital Literacy Program, its mission was simple yet powerful: to advance digital equity in Tennessee including community members, newcomers, and refugees with the essential technology skills needed in today’s world. What is commonly viewed as practical skills for most Americans, is a vital pathway for empowerment, independence, and connection for others.

A majority of participants joined with little or no prior computer knowledge, but through dedication and hands-on learning, they transformed their confidence and digital abilities. This was their first opportunity to bridge the digital divide, a gap that too often isolates newcomers, elders, and underserved communities from vital resources.

One such participant, Zaker, a newcomer to the U.S., had never used a computer before. He struggled with online forms, emails, and connecting with his teachers. After completing the program, he not only learned basic computer skills but also became comfortable using Webex and Zoom for virtual meetings, Google Apps for daily tasks, cybersecurity practices to protect himself online and apply for jobs to become self-sufficient.

Today, Zaker uses his skills to communicate with family overseas, attend community workshops, and even help friends create email accounts.

Zaker's journey reflects the program’s broader impact: breaking down digital barriers, fostering independence, and opening doors to education, employment, and social connection. By investing in digital literacy, AMAC affirms its commitment to building stronger, more resilient communities. The Digital Literacy Program has now helped dozens of learners, from job seekers to new Americans, to gain the confidence to use technology safely and effectively. Each success story demonstrates that with the right support, anyone can thrive in the digital age.
